CRYMYCH CLOSE IN ON ABERYSTWYTH

Division 1 West

Llangennech 31  Crymych 34

Crymych moved up to fourth place and within two points of rivals Aberystwyth and their eagerly awaited clash in a fortnight at Parc Lloyd Thomas promises to be an exciting one.

The Preselimen fought off a concerted second half comeback by Llangennech to record their fifth win of their campaign but this success away from home was the best yet and captain Tom Powell said his team were well worth their victory and added:”This was a very good team effort and the first win ever for Crymych in Llangennych so all the boys were happy to get a win especially with a bonus point.

“I thought Guto Davies our number eight carried well and I must mention prop Ifan James for his effort as he had to play out of position at hooker for the majority of the game.

“We defended really well as a team and this ultimately led to two ties from Guto Harries which made a huge difference in the end.”

Another to stand out was Tomos Phillips who was impressive throughout alongside centre partner Carwyn Phillips and Tomos Phillips crossed for two tries in the opening half both of which were converted by stand off Rhys Davies and the latter also added a penalty.

Llangennech went over for a first half try from full back Ellis Phillips to take the teams into the break with the score 17-5 in favour of the Pembrokeshire team.

The hosts came back strongly after the interval and hit back with tries from hooker Alex Jones and flanker Liam Jenkins both converted by Jon Griffiths.

Crymych winger Guto Harries who has impressed this season since coming into the side crossed for two breakaway tries after his team had been under the cosh for long periods and which were converted by Davies who also added another penalty to put his team in a very strong position.

Llangennech though responded once again with a further try from full back Phillips and another for hooker Jones which was again converted by fly half Griffiths to set up an exciting final quarter with just a couple of points separating the teams and the tension mounted with just a few minutes to go.

The hosts mounted a series of assaults on the visitors line but some superb tackling from the likes of skipper Tom Powell, number eight Guto Davies stand in hooker Ifan James and centre Phillips kept them out and Crymych hung on for a superb win.
