CRYMYCH CLIMBING

Division 1 West

Crymych 19 Gorseinon 15

A match winning try from talented centre Ifan Phillips steered his side to a very important win and lifted his team off the bottom of the table for the first time in over six months.
Phillips managed to escape the clutches of his marker and sliced through to touch down for a score that put his team into the lead and despite a late rally by Gorseinon they managed to hold on.
The Preselimen looked down and out just a few weeks ago but they are gaining momentum and if they keep digging like they are there will be light at the end of the tunnel. This will certainly go down as one of the great escapes although there is still a lot of work to be done.
However the resilient nature of their all round performance suggests that they are not going out without a fight and their final two games of the season against fellow strugglers Tycroes and then Kidwelly promise to be exciting affairs. If they win both they may well avoid relegation.
Gorseinon who are currently in fourth place in division one proved to be a tough nut to crack but the hosts led 12-3 at the break with their points coming from tries by wingers Tomos Phillips and Lawrence Headlam with one of the scores converted by centre Ifan Phillips whilst the visitors only score was from a penalty from outside half Tim O'Kelly.
There was little to choose between the teams in the second half but Gorseinon struck back with a penalty try and this was followed up by a try from Nicky Southgate which went unconverted to put the visitors 16-12 in front. Defeat for Rhys Biki Davies and his men would probably have signalled relegation but they battled on and got their just rewards when centre Ifan Phillips broke through for a third try which he converted to cap another fine individual display.
This weekend Crymych travel to fifth placed team Llangennech and the following Saturday they entertain Llanelli Wanderers which will be another must win game.
